Scenario: You are the SpR in the community mental health team. You are seeing Ms Sally Fox, a 28 year old woman with schizophrenia, for a routine outpatient review. She was diagnosed four years ago and has had three admissions to the psychiatric ward, each time following a period where she stopped takin gher oral antipsychotic medication (Risperidone). Her most recent admission was 12 months ago. She is currently taking Risperidone 6mg at night and is stable. Your team has been discussing the option of switching to Paliperidone – a long-acting injectable antipsychotic (LAI) to reduce the risk of further relapses. Your consultant has asked you to explore this with Sally and explain what it would involve. Your task is to: Explain what LAIs are, how they work, and the potential benefits and downsides for Sally. Explore Sally’s views and concerns.
